How do I engage the Bible?

The BIBLE is a fire.

The BIBLE is a sword.

The BIBLE is a hammer.

It is seed.

It is a mirror.

I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.

—Psalms 119:16 (NIV)

How do I engage the Bible?

To engage the Bible … there must be the right position.

You have to have a changed heart.

This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

—1 Corinthians 2:13,14 (NIV)

You have to have a hungry heart.

…He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

—Hebrews 11:6b (NKJV)

You have to have a “yes” heart.

You have to have a willing heart.

To engage the Bible … there must be the right practice

Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.”

—Luke 8:18 (NIV)

To engage the Bible … there must be the right pursuit.

And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, 38 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. 39 You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

—John 5:37-40 (NIV)

…and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

—2 Timothy 3:15 (NIV)

And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

—Luke 24:27 (ESV)

For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “YES!”

—2 Corinthians 1:20 (NLT)
