“Effort is one of the things that gives meaning to life. Effort means you care about something, that something is important to you and you are willing to work for it. It would be an impoverished existence if you were not willing to value things and commit yourself to working toward them.”

“Life without joy is

.” —Jason Robertson

Acts 20:18 (NLT) - When they arrived the Apostle Paul declared, “You know that from the day I set foot in the province of Asia until now 19 I have done the Lord’s work humbly and with many tears. I have endured the trials that came to me from the plots of the Jews. 20 I never shrank back from telling you what you needed to hear, either publicly or in your homes. 21 I have had one message for Jews and Greeks alike—the necessity of repenting from sin and turning to God, and of having faith in our Lord Jesus.

If try to stop sinning but never turn to God, sin will

and you.

If you turn to God but do not repent of your sin, then you will become a .

If you turn to God but reject Jesus’ lordship, you have God.

Acts 20:22 “And now I am bound by the Spirit to go to Jerusalem. I don’t know what awaits me, 23 except that the Holy Spirit tells me in city after city that jail and suffering lie ahead. 24 But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God. 25 “And now I know that none of you to whom I have preached the Kingdom will ever see me again. 26 I declare today that I have been faithful. If anyone suffers eternal death, it’s not my fault, 27 for I didn’t shrink from declaring all that God wants you to know.

“Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do the best of which you are capable.” —John Wooden

Life is not about your

BIBLE STUDY QUESTIONS

1) Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first time or something that caught your attention, challenged, or confused you? What blessed you the most?

2) Read Acts 20:7-12. What do you think of the story of Eutychus? By the way, the name “Eutychus” means “fortunate.” Do you ever find yourself sleepy or bored in church? What can you do to be more alert and prepared to worship and study God’s Word?

3) Read Acts 20:17-38 and list all the characteristics that you find in this chapter that the Apostle Paul is a true spiritual leader (e.g., humility, Spirit-led, etc).

4) A person’s character is more important than their accomplishments or possessions. Developing character is a partnership between God and us. We have our responsibility, and God is continually working on us. What do you learn about the character-building process and the partnership we have with God in building our character from 2 Peter 1:3-9?

5) As you think about the development of your character, is there anything you need to start, stop or do more to see growth?

6) At the end of his message, Pastor Jason gave five examples of how to respond to the sermon this week. Are you doing any of those, or do you have other ways that you are going to put this sermon into practice? Explain.

7) Pray for one another, your spiritual leaders, and at least one specific person that you can invite to church with you this week.
