Sermon Title: True Worship
Scripture: Exodus 20:4-6

Idolatry is worshiping what should be used OR using what should be used. - St. Augustine

1. Worshiping what should be used

5 areas of ownership:

my shoes
my dog
my wife
my country
my God

The 2nd commandment confronts us with this first question: Do I worship what should be used?

2. Using what should be worshiped

God invites us into a relationship of worship and something within us instinctively sees Him as a resource to be used.

The greatest worship you can ever offer to God is loving him in the middle of something you don’t understand, in the middle of a pain you would rather be without.

The 2nd commandment confronts us with a second question: Do I use what should be worshiped?

3. Why is idolatry such a big deal?

It is deeply offensive to God

It is deeply destructive to us

It is truly useless

Additional Notes:

Exodus 20:4-6
“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
