Blessed Are They That Mourn

Revolution: a sudden, radical, or complete change in the established order.

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair (Isaiah 61:1-3, NIV).

Beatitudes
“Be-attitudes”

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 5:1-10, NIV).

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. (Matthew 5:4, NIV).

“Blessed”
• To be happy (Philippians 4:12-13).
• To be approved.
• To receive God’s favor (Psalm 23:6).

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. (Matthew 5:4, NIV).

Three Kinds of Mourning:
• Natural mourning is grieving for someone you have lost.
• Sinful mourning is pining for something God has not given (1 Kings 21:1-16).
• Spiritual mourning is sorrow over our sins against God.
“For godly sorrow produces repentance… but the sorrow of the world produces death.”
(2 Corinthians 7:10, NKJV)

Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord… (Isaiah 55:6-7, ESV).

God’s foundation stands firm, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows who are his” and “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity”  (2 Timothy 2:19, ESV).

How to See Sin in Your Life

1. God’s Word
“The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes” (Psalm 19:8).

2. God’s Spirit
“When the [Holy Spirit] comes, he will convict the world concerning sin” (John 16:8).

“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” (Psalm 139:23-24).

3. God’s People
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective (James 5:16, NIV).

How to Mourn Over Sin
1. Weigh what this sin has done to you.
2. Recognize what this sin has done to others.
3. Consider what your sin did to Christ…
…and what Christ has done for you.

The Blessing That Those Who Mourn Will Receive

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. (Matthew 5:4, NIV).

Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him and to our God for he will abundantly pardon (Isaiah 55:6-7, ESV).

For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death (2 Corinthians 7:10, NKJV).

And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. (Romans 7:18-19, NLT).

Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 7:24-25, NLT).

This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them all. But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life. (1 Timothy 1:15-16, NLT).

Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or
are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11,
NLT
