Loving the Word

Sermon Series: The Book of James

Pastor Phil Chorlian

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. 26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. – James 1:19-27

Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. —John 6:68

I. What is going to be the

for how I live my life? The or the .

My soul faints with longing for your salvation, but I have put my hope in your word. —Psalm 119:81

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. —Matthew 7:24-25

II. Humbly

the truth that confronts me.

“If your god never disagrees with you, you might just be worshiping an idealized version of yourself.” —Timothy Keller

We also thank God continually because, when you received the Word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it, not as the word of men, but actually as it is, the Word of God, which is at work in you who believe. —I Thessalonians 2:13

III. Intently

the truth that guides me.

A. Set aside time to read, study, and meditate on God’s Word.

B. Have a Bible reading plan.

C. Don’t just read the Bible; let the Bible read you.

IV. An interesting

to this section:

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. —James 1:27

He has shown all you people what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. —Micah 6:8
