Main Idea
Confronting counterfeit cultures
Check-In (Highs & Lows) 15 min
A great, quick way to catch the highlights of what is happening in the lives of the people in your group is to take turns quickly sharing the “highs & lows” of your week. High: What was your biggest highlight since we last met? Low: What was the low point during this time?
Settle-In (Ice-Breaker) 10 min
Have you ever spent time chasing after something you thought you needed, only to realize it wasn’t what you thought it would be? What was it? Why did you think you needed it?
Dig-In (Scripture) 35 min
1. Read 1 John 3:4-6. Who breaks the law? Why is this important to understand?
2. How is sin defined in 1 John 3:4? What do you think of when you hear this definition?
3. Where do you see this definition of sin twist something good into a counterfeit culture?
4. Read 1 John 3:7. What is the warning given to us? Why do you think John gave this warning?
5. Read 1 John 3:8-10. How does John help us identify a child of God versus a child of Satan? How does this passage allow us to see how God views sin?
6. Read 1 John 5:18-20. Who does this verse provide hope for? How does this give us a glimpse of God’s love for us?
7. What are the areas in your life that Satan may have more control than you would like?
Gear-Up (Application) 15 min
1. What are the things of this world you find yourself pursuing that may be leading you astray?
2. What are specific ways you can strengthen your spiritual life to help you identity the counterfeit cultures of the world?
Step-Up (Homework)
1. Take some time this week to reflect on the things you are currently pursuing. Are there things that culture is telling you that you need? Ask God for wisdom as you continue to pursue the things you are.
2. What are some things you can do this week to find contentment in the spaces you aren’t content in?
