Title: Experiencing Rest and Restoration
Passage: Mark 2:23-28

How do we know what’s lawful vs unlawful on the Sabbath?

  1. The word “law” as used here is a reference to the Mishnah, not the Torah.
  2. The Torah, comprised of the first 5 books of the OT, is considered the Law of God.
  3. The Mishnah is a study book of the rabbinic interpretations of the Torah.

  4. 1st century Jews needed to hear the 2nd part of Jesus’ teaching. Man was not made for the sabbath.

  5. 21st century Americans need to hear the 1st part of the teaching: the sabbath was made for mankind.

  6. The sabbath was created, designed and tailored for your health and your soul.

The 4 Why’s behind the What
1. Stop
    a. Sabbath isn’t just a day off, it’s a day of no-working.
2. Rest
    a. Physically
    b. Emotionally
    c. Spiritually
3. Delight
    a. Sabbath implies delight and celebration.
4. Worship
    a. It’s hard to have the emotional capacity to enjoy God and His good gifts if we’re always distracted and exhausted.

Additional Notes:

Mark 2:23-28

One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
