Day 149 - Leadership Qualities

Carley Sheppard

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” - 2 Timothy 2:15 ESV

“Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.” - Hebrews 13:7 ESV

This month we will be learning about leadership. To start, we will talk about what good leadership qualities look like. Throughout the month, we will examine characters in the Bible that demonstrate outstanding leadership and verses that support leadership development. Additionally, there will be occasional quotes and resources from leaders that I follow. While some people are born with more leadership strengths, everyone must work daily to develop their leadership (John Maxwell, The Law of Process). It’s also important to note that anyone can be a leader. You can be a leader in your home, business, and church. As Christians, we are called to be set apart.

Hebrews 13:7 says to remember your leaders and imitate their faith. As we grow, we need to seek guidance from mentors. Find someone living the way you want to and do what they do! We can also learn these lessons from characters in the Bible. The Bible is full of examples of both good and bad leadership. Jesus is the ultimate leader to model our lives after. While many of our personal leaders and favorite Bible characters make mistakes, Jesus does not.

In closing, I contacted the Young Adult leaders and asked for their top leadership skills. Their top skills included humility, accountability, knowledge, teachable, willingness to listen, authenticity, patience, clear communication, and more. 2 Timothy 2:15 says to do your best to present yourself as approved. Therefore, be a worker that does not need to be ashamed!

Next Steps

  • Think about it: How are you working at improving your leadership skills?

  • Think about it: From whom/where can you seek wisdom from on this subject?

  • Action Step: Contact someone this week to set up a mentoring appointment. Come ready with a list of questions to ask!
