Discussion Questions
Getting Started
- Have you ever made a promise to God? Did you follow through? If you broke your oath, did you make it right? Are you still in a promise with God, and can share with the group a binding agreement you have made with Him?
Digging Deeper
Read about making a promise to God (Eccl 5:1-7; Dt 23:21-23; Matt 5:33-37; James 5:12; Num 30:2). Why are oaths so important to God? Why should we be slow to utter an agreement with God?
Meditate upon the history of the Sabbath (Gen 2:2-3; Ex 20:8-10; Heb 4:9). Read some specific laws about the Sabbath: no farming (Ex 24:21); no fire (Ex 35:2-3); attend an assembly (Lev 23:3); animals must rest (Ex 23:12). Why are the words of Jesus in Mark 2:27 so important for us?
What does it mean to give God your best (Col 3:17,23; 1 Cor 10:31; 2 Cor 8:7; 9:6-8; Dt 15:21; 17:1; Mark 12:43-44; Mal 3:10)? When it comes to your resources, does God get your first fruit or leftovers?
Applying the Word to Life
How much thought have you put into “who” your child will marry? Do you pray for them daily? Are you preparing them with truth to help them make wise decisions?
Ask Christ to give you a clear direction as you make God a priority in the following: your marriage, times of rest, giving opportunities, and church life.
