The Role of Prophet
• A prophet was used by God to communicate for God.
• Jesus fills this role primarily through His preaching and teaching.
36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” 38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
-Mark 1:36-38 (NIV)
The Role of Priest
• The role of priest was that of a mediator, reconciling humanity to God.
For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
-1 Timothy 2:5 (NIV)
• Jesus fills this role by coming to save the lost.
For the Son of Man came to seek and save what was lost.
Luke 19:10 (NIV)
• Jesus fills this role by coming to serve.
Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
-Matthew 20:28
The Role of King
• Jesus came to establish a new kingdom.
• His kingdom was not a local government, but a spiritual reality in which all are to submit to Him as king.
The Dangers of Not Accepting All Three Roles
Prophet + King – Priest = Fundamentalism
Prophet + Priest – King = Cultural Christianity
Priest + King – Prophet = Progressive Christianity
