Psalms 79:1-80:19
79:1-5 | After a severe blow- the sacking of the temple – the people asked not why but how long they must suffer. The question serves as a transformation from lament to prayer.
79:6-9 | The psalmist prays for divine vindication for his people, not in a spirit of vengeance but justice (Jer. 10:25). Without any regard for God, the heathen had desecrated God’s land and left His people desperate.
80:8-12 | Israel is like a vine that God has cared for like a gardener (Isa. 5:1-7; Ezek. 15:1-8; John 15). Israel’s task was to give shade to other nations – to offer those nations the benefits of God’s rule. But due to Israel’s disobedience, God broke down her hedges and removed His wall of protection around Israel, leaving her vulnerable to attack.
