Big Idea
“You see, the reason why Jesus has been given the name above all other names is because Jesus is the only person to have ever obeyed this third commandment, and he did so perfectly. And he did so because he saw the punishment that was yours for misusing his name, yet because he loves you, he took your punishment on the cross, paying the price for your dishonoring of his name. How incredible is that?”
What did we learn about the power of a name? What names have power in your life? Explain your answer.
What were the three questions that we are to ask about the name of God? Why is knowing the answers to these questions important for us to understand as Christ Followers?
Read: Exodus 20:7, Philippians 2:7b-11
What did you think it meant to take God’s name in vain? What did we learn it really means?
In what ways does our worship of God reflect in this commandment?
How would you respond if proclaiming Jesus’s name would cost you your life?
Talk about how Christians are often the ones who misrepresent Jesus’s name to the world through our actions.

What is the punishment or consequence for dishonoring the name of the Lord? Why is the punishment so severe?
If people believe in our misinterpretation of God, then who are they really worshiping?
At our death, what happens to our name? Why is this true of our name and not the name of Jesus?
It is true we are all guilty of breaking this commandment, so who will bear the guilt and punishment for our misuse of the Lord’s name? How do you know this to be true?

Pray: That you would begin to worship God the way he wants to be worshiped.
