The One With Something To Prove - Until Then
John 15:26-16:11
Chris Seidman, Sr. Minister
John 15:26-27 (NIV)
“When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father – the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father – he will testify about me. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.”
John 16:1-11 (NIV)
“All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
“I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, but now I’m going to him who sent me.
“None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
“When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.”
John 3:16 (NIV)
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son … .
Augustine in 400 A.D.
My sin was all the more incurable because I did not think of myself a sinner.
John 16:8 (NIV)
“When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment … .”
John 16:9 (NIV)
“… about sin, because people do not believe in me … .”
John 8:24 (NIV)
“I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.”
John 16:10 (NIV)
“… about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer … .”
John 16:11 (NIV)
“… about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.”
John 12:31-33 (NIV)
“Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.
Colossians 2:13-15 (NIV)
… God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
So What?
- The Spirit’s work should cultivate within us a deep sense of gratitude, relief, and prayer.
- We’re called to be witnesses, not prosecutors.
