BIG PICTURE: The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus opens the door to begin experiencing life the way it was meant to be. Death, pain, sorrow, grief, and tragedy no longer have the final word. The empty tomb means the worst thing is not the last thing.

TEXT: John 20:19-22

KEY VERSE: “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”
– John 20:21

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT JOHN’S GOSPEL

John wants you to know what Jesus’ life

.

Jesus is God’s response to the questions we have and the

we face.

John’s gospel is filled with allusions to the opening

in the Bible.

NO MORE EMPTY LIFE

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” —John 20:19-22

is God’s response to our fear of death, to grief, and to pain.

The resurrection doesn’t

that tragedies, heartache, and evil will not happen but that these things will not have the final word.

The

thing is not the thing.

Jesus’ resurrection is the

to life.

“But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” —John 20:31

NEXT STEPS: If Jesus is whom John claim him to be, a response is warranted. There comes a point in everyone’s life when steps of faith are needed. What is your next step? What is holding you back? What will you do?
