The selection of king David by God…

…the Lord has sought out a man after His own heart and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the LORD’s command. (1 Sam. 13:14b)

David: chosen by God for what he possessed

“But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.’” (1 Samuel 16:7)

A humble “He chose David His servant and took him from the sheep pens; from tending the sheep He brought him to be the shepherd of His people Jacob, of Israel His inheritance. And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.” (Psalm 78:70-72)

A mighty “But David said to Saul, ‘Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear…’” (1 Samuel 17:34-36a)

A poetic “These are the last words of David: ‘The oracle of David son of Jesse, the oracle of the man exalted by the Most High, the man anointed by the God of Jacob, Israel’s singer of songs…’” (2 Samuel 23:1)

A righteous

“David reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his people.” (2 Samuel 8:15)

A broken

“My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear. My wounds fester and are loathsome because of my sinful folly… For I am about to fall, and my pain is ever with me. I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin.” (Psalm 38:4-5, 17-18)

A forerunner to

“‘The days are coming,’ declares the LORD, ‘when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In His days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which He will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.’” (Jer. 23:5-6)

Through it all, king David spent his life on – “For when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed.” (Acts 13:36)

…He testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’ (Acts 13:22)
