Mark 1:16-20

Message Date:
June 6, 2021

16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.

19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

Read Mark 1:16-18

  1. Imagine yourself in the place of Simon and Andrew, going about your daily business when a stranger invites you to follow him. How would you respond? Why?

  2. Discuss what Jesus may have meant by ‘fishing for people.’

  3. To follow Jesus, the brothers had to leave their nets. What have you had to leave behind in order to pursue Jesus and God’s plan for you life? Was that a difficult decision for you?

  4. Why do you suppose Jesus didn’t say, “And bring those nets with you. They’ll come in handy later.”

Read Mark 1:19-20

  1. Do you think there is any significance to the fact that Jesus seemed to focus his recruiting on pairs of brothers?

  2. Consider the phrase ‘without delay,’ which suggests Jesus wasn’t willing to waste any time. What is God calling you to do that you have been putting off for awhile? What will you do about it?

  3. Why do you think Mark includes the detail about the hired men in the boat with Zebedee?
