Sermon Title: Who Is Jesus…Really?
Rev. Mark Adams

Sermon Notes:

15 - The Son is the image of the invisible God, the Firstborn over all creation.

16 - For in Him all things were created: things in Heaven and on Earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.

17 - He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

18 - And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and the Firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything He might have the supremacy.

19 - For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him,

20 - and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on Earth or things in Heaven, by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross. —Colossians 1:15-20

What do we need to know about Jesus to REALLY KNOW ABOUT Jesus. In our text, Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, says three things.

1.) Jesus is .

“The Son is the image of the invisible God…For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him.” —Colossians 1:14, 19

“Jesus was the audible, visible Word Who expressed the heart of the inaudible, invisible God. Jesus Christ is God’s great Visual Aid.” —Dale Bruner

*“When you have seen Me you have seen the Father and the Father and I are one.” * —John 10:30, 14:7

2.) He is and .

“For in Him all things were created: things in Heaven and on Earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” —Colossians 1:16-17

3.) He is of the .

“He (Jesus) is the head of the body, the church.” —Colossians 1:18

“You may not have a pastor—but you still have a HEAD!” —Dr. Charles Bugg

“The New Testament speaks of the church as the body of Christ which includes all of the redeemed of all the ages. The Lord’s Supper is a symbolic act of obedience whereby members of the church, through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine—memorialize the death of the Redeemer and anticipate His second coming.” —Baptist Faith and Message 1963

4.) He is of all .

“For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him—and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on Earth or things in Heaven, by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross.” —Colossians 1:19-20

“I cannot see as plainly as others do, and as I should wish to do, evidence of God’s design and goodness. There seems to me too much misery in the world. I cannot persuade myself that a beneficent and omnipotent God would have intentionally created the ichneumonida—-with the express intention of their feeding within the living bodies of caterpillars—or that a cat should play with mice.” —Charles Darwin

“For the creation was subjected to frustration, so that the creation will be liberated from its bondage to decay.” —Romans 8

“There’s a gigantic rupture and wound in creation. So what’s the proper response to this? We groan. We ache, because we know there’s supposed to be a better world.” —Matt Woodley

“He is the beginning and the Firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything He might have the supremacy.” —Colossians 1:18

“The wolf will live with the lamb. The leopard will lie down with the goat, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” —Isaiah 11

“God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain [in this world].” —Revelation 21

“The death of an obscure Jew [Jesus] on a seemingly God-forsaken hill in a backwater of the Roman Empire attracted no notice from the historians of the era—but it was the event that reconciles heaven and earth and us to God.” —N.T. Wright
