If you could use one word to describe the attitude of our society today, what would it be?

Respect is

for a person because of his or her position, abilities, qualities, or achievements.

In the Bible, respect is more specifically

of acknowledging another person’s worth.

Disrespect is the

to acknowledge another’s worth.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT DISRESPECT?

The Bible mentions 4 categories.

1.

are owed respect because of their age and experience.

Leviticus 19:32 “You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the LORD.

Deuteronomy 28:50 a hard-faced nation who shall not respect the old or show mercy to the young.

1 Timothy 5:1–2 Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.

2.

are owed respect and that includes.

Romans 13:7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

1 Timothy 3:2–3 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

1 Thessalonians 5:12–13 We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.

Hebrews 12:9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected
them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live?

Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.

Ephesians 5:33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

1 Peter 2:18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust.

Who might be the masters of today?

3.

deserves the honor and respect of man.

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

John 4:44 (For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.)

4.Respect is something that is owed to

simply because of our humanity.

The term “IMAGO-DEI” means -

. That makes us His .

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

As Christians we are not only to honor our fellow believers, but we are also to respect those who

believe. Because we are to the truth, and the hope that we have in Christ.

1 Peter 3:14–17 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.

1 Peter 2:17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.

The Consequence of Disrespect.

Romans 13:3–4 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.

Galatians 6:6–8 Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.
