Scripture: Colossians 2:6-15
Big Question: The past can haunt us. How can God erase our transgressions and make room for us to be new creations?

Take some time to share:
• One thing that you are thankful for this week.

• One thing you need.

• How can the group help?

Bible Discussion: Read Colossians 2:6-23
• What about this passage stands out to you as you read?

• What do you think Paul is attempting to communicate to the readers of this letter?

• Is anything acceptable if we are saved by Christ?

• What does this have to do with “belonging”—the theme for this week’s sermon?

• How does the behavior that Paul is calling out create a culture of exclusion rather than belonging?

Application:
• Think about your answers to the last 2 questions above, and then apply that same thinking to the church today. How often do visitors to churches complain about how hard it is to become a part of the community?

• What are some behaviors that we label as holy & necessary, yet have little to do with the actual furthering of God’s kingdom?

• How does legalism threaten to exclude, isolate, and reject those whom Christ has accepted?

• What church rituals, traditions, or language may be keeping other out instead of inviting them in?

CHALLENGE: Take a few minutes this week to think about the last question posed above. How can we work to change this? Bring this up with your Sunday School class, small group, or with those you are having coffee with during the week. One of the greatest gifts that we can offer to others is a place to belong. Let’s work to make Highland just that!
