Sermon Title & Text “God of the Hills and the Valleys” 1 Kings 20:1-30 ESV

Sermon Series: Wisdom: What God Knows! Better decisions & Greater Insight
Message in a Sentence: The point of it all, is for all to know that the Lord is God.
• Following warnings from Elijah, 3 1/2 years of drought, demonstrations of God’s power, these 2 wars of I Kings 20 are Ahab & Israel’s last chances to align with the Lord, before God cuts them off.
• Via King Asa’s agreement, Syria & Israel have a vassal relationship, which allows Syria to make certain demands on Israel cf 15:19. Now in ch 20, Syria picks a fight with Israel.
• What we believe in Scripture is like a woven thread, throughout. God has consistently conveyed His intention to reveal Himself as the Lord

Exodus 3:15 - Moses’ Burning Bush call, “This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.”
✤ Ten Plagues were to let all know, The Lord the scope of the Lord in the earth, Exodus 7:17, 8:10, 22; 9:14, 16; 10:2, 11:7; 12:12-13

• Two Wars. One Point: and you shall know that I am Lord vv13&28

a. Size: You are small, the problem is bigger
b. God’s Promise: I will give into your hand
c. You Shall Know: This has & remains God’s goal, that we would know Him & who He is!
d. Details: We don’t know how to clean up or fix, until God tells us.

• Small View: Syria’s view of God as a God of the hills but not the valleys, echoes common thought that God is like us, therefore:

  1. God is limited by location
  2. God has a limited scope of power

• Christ is the Lord, 1 Peter 3:15, 2 Pt. 1:11, Luke 6:46, Acts 2:26, 10:36, 1 Cor 8:6, Eph 4:5.
• Christ is the Lord & He overwhelmed sin so all would know, the Lord is God. 1 Tim. 1:12-17, 1 Cor. 1:26-31, 2 Cor. 2:14-17, Galatians 5:13-15, Ephesians 1:2-10, Colossians 1:6-15, Colossians 2:8-3:17
