Jeremiah 31:33
“But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel after those days,” says the Lord. “I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. NLT
Main Idea:
Sabbath rest meant a day to seek God and to cease work.
Every person needs a regular Sabbath rest.
Exodus 20:8-11
“Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 You have six days each week for your ordinary work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
Isn’t it interesting that we haven’t even gotten into “works” yet…
- God first
- Idols
- Lords name in vain
- REST?
How did Jesus teach it?
NT - Matthew 11:28-30 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” ESV
Luke 5:16 (In response to the crowds of people Jesus was always around) But Jesus would often go to some place where he could be alone and pray. CEV
In our noisy society today…We are frantically addicted to busy.
Jesus said, be more like Mary than Martha
Luke 10:38-42 - 38 As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. 40 But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” 41 But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! 42 There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” NLT
IMPORTANT:
When we take the sabbath seriously.
It shows we prioritize reliance on God more than reliance on ourselves.
So what does this whole sabbatical message mean for us?
Keeping sabbath practices a priority like:
- Church
- Prayer
- Bible reading
- Blocks in your schedule where you DO NOTHING
What if I am too busy to honor the sabbath? God would understand right?
Psalm 46:10 - “Be still, and know that I am God! NLT
Ex. 34:21 “Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest.
