Introduction:

Romans is considered the “Constitution” of the Christian faith. It sets the doctrine and duty of every Christian. Just like the Constitution of the United States provides its citizens with the framework to boldly exercise their rights, the book of Romans provides the follower of Jesus Christ with the spiritual boldness to live out their faith in Christ.

The purpose of the book of Romans is to reveal the role of faith in the life of a Christian. It explores saving faith, the faith by which a sinner is saved through the Gospel of Christ, and sanctifying faith, the faith that helps us live a new life in Christ.

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” —Romans 5:8

LIVING BOLD WEEK #4: “The Pursuit”

Today’s Takeaway: Jesus gives us power over our sin.

I. YOUR POSITION IN CHRIST (6:1–10)

Believers must be aware of three facts.

A. Believers have been

with Christ. (6:1–3)

B. Believers have been with Christ. (6:4–5)

C. Believers are now dead and alive. (6:6–10)

  1. Dead to and (6:6–7)
  2. Alive in (6:8–10)

II. STRONGLY ABOUT CHRIST (6:11)

“I have glorified you on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do.” —John 17:4
“… It is Finished …” —John 19:30

III. DAILY TO CHRIST (6:12–23)

Paul describes two kinds of yielding.

A. The

kind of yielding (6:12–13a)

“19Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, 20idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, 21envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I am warning you about these things—as I warned you before—that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” —Galatians 5:19-21

B. The

kind of yielding (6:13b–23)

  1. The confusion (6:15a)
  2. The correction (6:15b–18)
  3. The challenge (6:13b–14, 19–22)

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things.” —Galatians 5:22-23

  4. The conclusion (6:23)

CONCLUSION: What sin do you need to confess today?

DEEP DIVE QUESTIONS:

  1. Verses 6 and 7 tell us that we are to be dead to sin and self. Do you die to self daily?

  2. Read the list of works in Galatians 5:19-21 again. Do you see any of that in your own life?

  3. Read the list of fruit in Galatians 5:22-23. Do you see an of those in your life?

  4. What sins do you to confess to God?
