Chapters 68 and 69 of Skye Jethani’s “What If Jesus was Serious.”
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” —Matthew 7:24-27 (NIV)
- A story of two different kinds of Christians
- Daniel Akin writes “at first glance there do not appear to be any differences between the two.” They heard Jesus, they went and built houses, in the same general location.
- It is the foundation that truly determines whether what is built will truly endure
- This is a very direct challenge from Jesus, the wise who will withstand the storm and the fool who will succumb to it.
- What ever is built, big or small, elaborate or simple the foundation is a life built on Jesus and his teachings, love God and love others, live out the golden rule.
Reflection
What are some practices you have and/or can add to make sure your foundation is on Jesus and what he taught in the sermon on the mount?
