“Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.” Romans 6:14 (NLT)

I. WHAT IS THE LAW?

II. WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW?
Seven different pictures of the Law are given in the New Testament:

“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1 (ESV)

1.- The Law is pictured as a

.

Lesson: The law is to

us, not to us.

Think of it this way. If a father dies and leaves an inheritance for his young children, those children are not much better off than slaves until they grow up, even though they actually own everything their father had. 2 They have to obey their guardians until they reach whatever age their father set. Galatians 4:1–2 (NLT)

2.- The Law is pictured as a

.

Lesson: The law is for

people.

30 “But what do the Scriptures say about that? “Get rid of the slave and her son, for the son of the slave woman will not share the inheritance with the free woman’s son.” 31 So, dear brothers and sisters, we are not children of the slave woman; we are children of the free woman.” Galatians 4:30–31 (NLT)

3.- The Law is pictured as a

.

Lesson: Only by grace are we

family members.

“When you were dead in your sins in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave all of our sins having canceled the written code with its regulations.” Colossians 2:14 (NIV)

4.- The Law is pictured as a

.

Lesson: You are no longer in

to the law.

16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. Colossians 2:16–17 (NIV)

5.- The Law is pictured as a

.

“The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship.” Hebrews 10:1 (NIV)

Lesson: The

is Jesus.

6.- The Law is pictured as a

.

23 “Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.” James 1:23–24 (NIV)

Lesson: The law

my condition but it can’t it.

7.- The Law is pictured as a

.

4 “So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.” Romans 7:4 (NIV)

Lesson: Before Christ came the Jews were

to the Law.

III. HOW ARE WE “FREE” FROM THE LAW?

6 But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code. Romans 7:6 (ESV)

1.- We don’t

the Law in order to get to .

“For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.” Romans 3:20 (NLT)

“For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” John 1:17 (ESV)

“For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given. As a result, all who believe in him are made right with God.” Romans 10:4 (NLT)

2.- We’re free from the Law’s

.
Galatians 3:13, Romans 8:1

“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”— Galatians 3:13 (NASB)

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1 (ESV)

3.- Two extremes to avoid and how we

our freedom:

“We know that the law is good when used correctly.” 1 Timothy 1:8 (NLT)

“Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith.” Galatians 3:24 (NLT)
