[Romans 13:11-14 ESV]
11 Besides this you know the time,
that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep.
For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand.
So then let us cast off the works of darkness
and put on the armor of light.
13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime,
not in orgies and drunkenness,
not in sexual immorality and sensuality,
not in quarreling and jealousy.
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ,
and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
Romans (Part 38) - It’s Time To Wake Up!
[Romans 13:11 ESV]
11 Besides this you know the time,
that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep…
WHY is NOW the time to WAKE UP?
Because…
[Romans 13:11 ESV]
11 … you know the time…
What is the time or season that we are in?
[Acts 17:30-31 ESV]
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked,
but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world
in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed;
and of this he has given assurance to all
by raising him from the dead.”
WHY is NOW the time to WAKE UP?
Because…
[Romans 13:11 ESV]
11 … salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
Salvation has three stages:
Justification, Sanctification, Glorification.
[Romans 8:30 ESV]
30 And those whom he predestined he also called,
and those whom he called he also justified,
and those whom he justified he also glorified.
[1 John 3:2 ESV]
2 Beloved, we are God’s children now,
and what we will be has not yet appeared;
but we know that when he appears we shall be like him,
because we shall see him as he is.
[1 Corinthians 15:51-52 ESV]
51 Behold! I tell you a mystery.
We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.
For the trumpet will sound,
and the dead will be raised imperishable,
and we shall be changed.
WHY is NOW the time to WAKE UP?
Because…
[Romans 13:12 ESV]
12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand…
[1 John 2:15-16 ESV]
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world.
If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world–
the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life
–is not from the Father but is from the world.
As Christians we live in an already, not yet state.
[1 John 2:8 ESV]
8 At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.

Unbelief
[2 Peter 3:3-4 ESV]
3 … scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing,
following their own sinful desires.
4 They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming?
For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing
as they were from the beginning of creation.”
FAITH
[2 Peter 3:9-10 ESV]
9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish,
but that all should reach repentance.
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief,
and then the heavens will pass away with a roar,
and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved,
and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
[Matthew 24:43-44 ESV]
43 But know this, that if the master of the house
had known in what part of the night the thief was coming,
he would have stayed awake
and would not have let his house be broken into.
44 Therefore you also must be ready,
for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
We must live awake to the reality of what time it is.
SO THEN…
CAST OFF
[Romans 13:12 ESV]
12 … So then let us cast off the works of darkness…
[Romans 13:13 ESV]
13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime,
not in orgies and drunkenness,
not in sexual immorality and sensuality,
not in quarreling and jealousy.
Every human was made by God for God, and is accountable to God.
[John 13:10 ESV]
10 … “The one who has bathed does not need to wash,
except for his feet, but is completely clean… “
Is there anything that you need to lay aside?
PUT ON…
[Romans 13:12 ESV]
12 … the armor of light.
[Romans 13:14 ESV]
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ…
[2 Corinthians 10:3-4 ESV]
3 For though we walk in the flesh,
we are not waging war according to the flesh.
4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh
but have divine power to destroy strongholds.
[Ephesians 6:11-18 ESV]
11 Put on the whole armor of God,
that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood,
but against the rulers, against the authorities,
against the cosmic powers over this present darkness,
against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth,
and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
15 and, as shoes for your feet,
having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.
16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith,
with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;
17 and take the helmet of salvation,
and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,
18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance,
making supplication for all the saints…
put on; dress; clothe.
to be imparted ⇔ be clothed —
to be or become bestowed or endowed with a quality or condition;
understood as being wrapped in a covering. —Lexham Research Lexicon of the Greek New Testament
PUT ON…
[Romans 13:14 ESV]
14 … the Lord Jesus Christ…
[Galatians 3:27 ESV]
27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ
have put on Christ.
Romans 8:29
[Colossians 3:12-14 ESV]
12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and,
if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other;
as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
14 And above all these put on love,
which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
[Romans 13:14 ESV]
14 … make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
… you know the time…
… salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed…
The night is far gone; the day is at hand…
SO THEN…
… wake from sleep…
… cast off the works of darkness…
… put on the armor of light, put on the Lord Jesus Christ…
AND
… walk properly as in the daytime…
