God’s Word for us Today: Let My People Go… On Vacation!
Rev. Kevin Freeman

Sermon Notes:
Amid extensive periods of ministry, Jesus knew His disciples needed a period of refreshing and renewal. They needed a vacation! How about you? As summer vacation season begins, consider what God’s Word has to say about vacationing in a way that will refresh your soul.

You need a vacation!

Nothing arrives more slowly and passes more quickly than a vacation. —Anonymous

Those dear soul’s who argue that the devil never takes a vacation should remember that we are not supposed to imitate the devil. —Havner, Vance

God loves to refresh His people through vacation!

30 The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. 31 And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. 32 And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves. —Mark 6:30–32 ESV

How can we make the most of vacation?

1.) Make vacation a from the .

And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. —Mark 6:7 ESV

So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. —Mark 6:12 ESV

Unfortunately, in our modern performance-driven society, we are too often in a hurry to rush on to the next project as soon as we complete a task. We rarely take the time to celebrate what the Lord has allowed us to accomplish. When you complete a major project in your life, take a lesson from the remnant and commemorate your achievement with great joy. Go out to dinner, have a party, take a vacation. —Israel P. Loken

Renewal and restoration are not luxuries. They are essentials. Being alone and resting for a while is not selfish. It is Christlike. Taking your day off each week or rewarding yourself with a relaxing, refreshing vacation is not carnal. It’s spiritual. There is absolutely nothing enviable or spiritual about a coronary or a nervous breakdown, nor is an ultrabusy schedule necessarily the mark of a productive life. —Chuck Swindoll

2.) Use vacation to your .

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. —Psalm 23:1–3 ESV

The goal of vacation is to come back refreshed for the things God has called you to do.

Remember that “working vacation” is a contradiction in terms. —Marshall Shelley

And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. —Mark 6:31 ESV

a while -

: Time away is meant to last only for a period of time.

He enjoys true leisure who has time to improve his soul’s estate. —Henry David Thoreau

3.) Vacation from , not from .

We may clock out, but we never check out. We go, even on vacation, as people sent by God.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. —1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

While you ought to let your hair down on vacation, be sure to keep your spiritual antenna up. —Aaron Syvertsen
