Rogue: Judas

Judas was attracted to Jesus because of Jesus’ POWER.

  • Judas saw Jesus’ power over evil (Mark 5:1-20).
  • Judas saw Jesus’ power over nature (Mark 4:35-41).
  • Judas saw Jesus’ power over death and life (John 11:38-44).

Judas Was Done With Jesus
Why was Judas done with Jesus? What caused him to turn from Jesus and betray Him?

Mary pours perfume on the feet of Jesus

“Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages. He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it”
— John 12:5,6

Judas agrees to betray Jesus

“Then one of the Twelve – the one called Judas Iscariot – went to the chief priests and asked, ‘What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?’ So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over”
— Matthew 26:14-16

Judas was done with Jesus because Jesus wasn’t doing what he wanted Him to do. Judas had an agenda that Jesus wasn’t fulfilling.

Many believe and live as though God exists for them, rather than them existing for God.

Jesus Wasn’t Done With Judas
Jesus gave Judas a seat of honor

“Jesus replied, ‘The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me”
— Matthew 26:23

Jesus washes Judas’ feet

“The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him”
— John 13:2-5

Jesus confronts Judas

“Then Judas, the one who would betray him said, ‘Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?’ Jesus answered, ‘You have said so’”
— Matthew 26:25

Jesus calls Judas friend

“While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: ‘The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.’ Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, ‘Greetings, Rabbi!’ and kissed him. Jesus replied, ‘Do what you came for, friend”
— Matthew 26:50

Everything Judas thought would bring him power only brought him misery and pain.

“Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor. When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. ‘I have sinned,’ he said, ‘for I have betrayed innocent blood.’ ‘What is that to us?’ they replied. ‘That’s your responsibility’”
— Matthew 27:1-4

“He went away and hung himself”
— Matthew 27:5b

Judas was remorseful but he was NOT repentant.

What does our kiss of betrayal look like?

Lessons to Learn

  1. The journey into sin always has a downward spiral.
  2. We can be associated with Jesus, yet refuse to repent.

If you don’t heal what hurt you, you will bleed on those who didn’t cut you.
