Introduction:

John was one of the 12 Apostles that followed Jesus. He wrote about the life of Jesus through the perspective of an eyewitness to Jesus’ life and ministry on earth. John was probably the last Apostle to be alive at the end of the 1st century, a time in history marked by the rule of the Roman Empire and the circulation of many false stories about Jesus and His resurrection. These false teachings became a major concern for John. John wrote the book of 1 John as a pathway of light to help Christians understand not just the revelation of Jesus, but His illumination. John is testifying that what was revealed should never be concealed.

“I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” —1 John 5:13

Today’s Takeaway: Faith in Jesus makes us victorious.

Week 3 - Walking in Faith

I. FAITH IS THE OF CHRISTIANITY

A. Faith is the basis of

.

“For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift – 9not from works, so that no one can boast.” —Ephesians 2:8-9

B. Faith is the basis of the Christian

.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” —II Corinthians 5:7

“… the just shall live by his faith.” —Habakkuk 2:4

C. Faith is the key to

God.

“Now without faith it is impossible to please God: since the one who draws near to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” —Hebrews 11:6

“Fallen man is not simply an imperfect creature who needs improvement: he is a rebel who must lay down his arms.” —C. S. Lewis Mere Christianity, 56

II. FAITH IS FOR FORGIVENESS (2:12)

“She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” —Matthew 1:21

“No longer will one teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know Me, from the least to the greatest of them”—this is the Lord’s declaration. “For I will forgive their iniquity and never again remember their sin.” —Jeremiah 31:34

“The name of LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are protected.” —Proverbs 18:10

III. FAITH IS THE SOURCE OF (2:13–14)

Our ability to defeat the evil one has a twofold source:

A. The

of Christ

“The one who commits sin is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God was revealed for this purpose: to destroy the devil’s works.” —1 John 3:8

B. The

of God

“Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.” —Psalms 119:105

Walking in the Light Thought: When Satan accuses me of sin, I trust the work of Christ.

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, 2because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.” —Romans 8:1-2
