Message Notes

Scripture

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22 reject every kind of evil.

23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.

25 Brothers and sisters, pray for us. —1 Thessalonians 5:16-25 (NIV)

Discuss

  1. What stood out to you the most in this weekend’s teaching? Was anything particularly challenging, encouraging, or confusing to you?

  2. Which of Paul’s words of admonition in verses 16-18 come to you most naturally in your life right now? Which one do you hope to grow in 2022?

  3. What did you hear in this week’s teaching about what it means to “not quench the spirit?” (v. 19.) How does this teaching relate to your journey of faith right now?

  4. How do verses 23-24 speak to how spiritual growth in the Christian life takes places? How does this teaching contrast with an approach that focuses entirely on self-effort?

  5. Can you share about a time in your life when you grew in your relationship with God in a profound way? What role did you play in this process? What role did God play? What role did others play?

  6. Read verse 25 again. Why do you think it was such a big deal to Paul that these fellow followers of Jesus remembered Him in prayer? Has anyone ever been an encouragement to you in the way that they prayed for you?

  7. What is one thing from this week’s teaching that you will apply to your life as we begin a new year?
