Gifts, Ministries, Activities
1 Corinthians 12:1(NKJV) Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:
1 Corinthians 12:4-7(NKJV) 4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
The word “gift” is the Greek word charismata. The charis part of the word means grace. The ma portion of the word means that it is grace given. So, they are grace-gifts.
A gift is a special, supernatural enablement or capacity to do the work of God. Spiritual gifts are not natural capacities; they are supernaturally bestowed capacity.
The word “ministries” means forms of services, and different kinds of services. It is possible to have the same gift but have a different ministry.
The word “activities” means effects and literally has the idea of what is worked out or energized. This word in Greek (energemata – energizing) means manifestations of the Spirit’s power, not human power.
The Gifts of the Spirit
1 Corinthians 12:8-11(NKJV) 8for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
The Nine Gifts of the Holy Spirit
The Word of Knowledge- This gift of the Holy Spirit is having knowledge about something that you have no ability or means of knowing based on your human intelligence.
The Word of Wisdom- This gift is the unique ability to speak forth the wisdom of God, especially in an important situation. It gives you the ability and understanding of how to apply the word of knowledge.
The Gift of Prophecy- This gift of the Holy Spirit is one that the scripture says, “to especially desire.” This gift is a direct Word from the Lord that is to be given to someone else to edify and build them up. It is also the telling-forth of God’s message in a particular situation, and sometimes this has the character of foretelling the future, as in
1 Corinthians 14:1-5(NKJV) Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.
1 Thessalonians 5:19-21(NKJV) 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test all things; hold fast what is good.
The Gift of Faith- The gift of faith is the unique ability to trust God against all circumstances, as Peter did when he walked out of the boat onto the water. The gift of faith is knowing full well that you cannot accomplish something on your own, but that Lord has empowered you to move into new levels to do miracles and wonders in His name. It means to be firmly persuaded of God’s power and promises to accomplish His will and purposes, and to display such a confidence in Him and His Word that those circumstances and obstacles do not shake that conviction.
The Gifts of Healings- There are actually different kinds of healings that the Spirit will do. Notice that the scripture says “gifts,” plural. These gifts equip you in various ways to access healing and be an anointed vessel that will heal others.
The Working of Miracles- This gift of the Holy Spirit is depicted throughout the Bible, from Moses parting the Red Sea to Jesus feeding 5000 people. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Therefore, He is still in the business of working miracles. This spiritual gift is manifested not by human efforts, but by the Holy Spirit. The work is unexplainable by nature; the Holy Spirit chooses to “override” the laws of nature.
The Discerning of Spirits- This gift of the Holy Spirit equips the discerner to see evil spirits that are operating in someone’s life. The Holy Spirit pulls back the curtains, exposing the evil spirits so that the person can experience a breakthrough from their bondage. This gift is to clearly distinguish truth from error by judging whether the behavior or teaching is from God, Satan, human error; it’s the ability to tell the difference between true and false doctrine, and between what is of the Holy Spirit and what isn’t.
Acts 8:18-23 18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! 21 You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God. 22 Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.”
Acts 16:16-18 16 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. 17 This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” 18 And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour.
Different Kinds of Tongues- Divers Kinds of Tongues as it is called in the KJV is not the same gift as the Baptism of the Holy Spirt. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is for all believers to receive. The Divers Kinds of Tongues is a ministry gift of the Holy Spirit, and it is given as He chooses. When we receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, we say we have received our “prayer language.”
In the “prayer language,” you are the one that usually initiates it. In the “spiritual gift” it is the Holy Spirit that initiates it.
In the “prayer language” the speaker is the main beneficiary. In the “spiritual gift, other people are the main beneficiaries.
In the “prayer language” you are talking to God. In the “spiritual gift” God is talking to others through you.
In the “prayer language” you are encouraged to do it all the time. In the “spiritual gift” you only do it when the Holy Spirit tells you to.
In the “prayer language” no interpretation is needed or expected because God is the intended audience, and He understands it. In the “spiritual gift,” the gift of interpretation of tongues will likely be given so that the people can understand the message and receive the benefit God intended for them.
The Interpretation of Tongues- This gift of the Holy Spirit is to interpret the tongue that was spoken. This can either be for yourself or for the Church. This gift allows the gift of tongues to be of benefit for those other than the speaker, as they are able to hear and agree with the speaker’s words. Tongues and the interpretation of tongues is equal to prophecy.
Many Members of One Body
1 Corinthians 12:20-26(NKJV) 20 But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. 21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary. 23 And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty, 24 but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it, 25 that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. 26 And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
1 Corinthians 12:27-31(NKJV) 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. 28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.
Gift of Helps- to render support or assistance to others in the body to free them up for ministry.
Gift of Administrations- to steer the body toward the accomplishment of God-given goals and directives by planning, organizing, and supervising others; to steer, guide, helmsmen
1 Peter 4:9-11(NKJV) 9 Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. 10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 11 If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Gift of Hospitality- to warmly welcome people, even strangers, into one’s home or church as a means of serving those in need of food or lodging, love of strangers
Serve God with Spiritual Gifts
Romans 12:3-8(NKJV) 3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. 4 For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; 7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; 8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
Gifts of Serving- to identify undone tasks in God’s work, however menial, and use available resources to get the job done; to run errands
Gifts of Exhortation- to come along side of someone with words of encouragement, comfort, consolation, and counsel to help them be all God wants them to be
Gift of Giving- to share what material resources you have with liberality and cheerfulness without thought of return
Gifts of Leadership- to stand before the people in such a way as to attend to the direction of the body with such care and diligence to motivate others to get involved in the accomplishment of these goals
Gifts of Mercy- to be sensitive toward those who are suffering, whether physically, mentally, or emotionally, to feel genuine sympathy with their misery, speaking words of compassion but more so caring for them with deeds of love to help alleviate their distress
Stir Up the Gifts
1 Timothy 4:12-16(NKJV) 12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. 15 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. 16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
Be Endued with Power
Luke 24:49(NKJV) 49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
Acts 1:4-8(NKJV) 4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 2:1-4(KJV) And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Build Your Faith
Jude 1:20-21(NKJV) 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
Faith Works by Love
Galatians 5:6(KJV) 6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
