There is nothing that
Now when the king lived in his house and the LORD had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.” And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you.” —2 Samuel 7:1-3 ESV
But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: Would you build me a house to dwell in? I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling. In all places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word… saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ “I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. And I have been with you wherever you went and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name… And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house. —2 Samuel 7:4-11 ESV
Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, “Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord GOD… And what more can David say to you? Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it. —2 Samuel 7:18-21 ESV
GOD IS NOT
OR
of anything we have!
If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it. Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats? “Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High, and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.” —Psalm 50:12-15 NIV
David expanded the God’s Kingdom at his own expense.
Jesus tells us unapologetically to invest in heaven by the people we reach.
I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone (Wealth), you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. —Luke 16:9 NIV
David gave something tangible because He loved GOD.
But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” —2 Samuel 24:24 NIV
David obeyed what God asked of him.
For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. —1 Timothy 6:7-10 NIV
“The primary purpose of giving is not that God would get the money out of our pockets, but that he would get the idols out of our hearts.”
3 questions I want you to ask:
• What does what you do with your money show that you delight in?
• What does what you do with your money show that you trust in?
• What does what you do with your money indicate what kingdom you are building?
