Week 5 HPC @ Home Guide
Scripture: John 12:1-8
Takeaway: We are fragile.
Take some time to share:
• One thing that you are thankful for this week.
• One thing you need.
• How can the group help?
Bible Discussion: Read John 12:1-8
• Mary is often portrayed as the more frivolous sister, who tends to live fully in the moment. When others are found scolding her for her actions, Jesus is found celebrating her or weeping alongside her. What do you think we can learn from Mary?
• The scene from today’s passage takes place at the home of the recently resurrected Lazarus. What might the significance of that occurrence have on the current events unfolding?
Application:
The sense of the fragility of life is never more present than when death is called to mind. Having experienced a pandemic in which now everyone knows someone whose life was cut short by the virus, most of us have found ourselves saying, “I’ve been really rethinking what is important, how I spend my time, what I want to spend my precious time and energy on.” Perhaps this is why it feels like a poignant moment to acknowledge our fragility and extend mercy for falling short and spend much more time going deep rather than wide with overextending ourselves until we forget to savor life.
• What is it about facing death that makes us do crazy things?
• Our needing to do things we don’t always want, to pay bills, eat, etc., often sits in tension with our wanting to do things that honor the preciousness of life. We’ve all had the “if I only had a few weeks to live, I’d do this…” thought or conversation. How can we find a better balance between these?
• Have you ever done something wild or extravagant in order to more fully experience life?
