“What is the Church?”

Ephesians 2:19-22
August 13, 2023

Main point: In Ephesians 2:19-22 Paul provides three metaphors to describe the church and why you should be a committed member.

I. We are Citizens of God’s Kingdom
Verse 19a

II. We are Members of God’s Household
Verse 19b

III. We are Living Stones in God’s Temple
Verses 20-22

Questions for Spiritual Growth

Our Cornerstone mission is To Know Christ and Make Him Known. Community Groups help us to live out our mission as we discuss the Scripture passage from the sermon, how to apply it, and pray for one another.

  1. What are some criteria to evaluate whether you should join a church? What Scriptures support your answer?

  2. The early church did not have official “membership.” Why should we?

  3. How does a living relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and devotion to Him and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) result in participating membership in the church?

  4. What are some of the rights, responsibilities and relationships that come with being a member of God’s kingdom? How can you be a better steward of each?

  5. What does it mean to be a member of “God’s household” (verse 19)? How is it different than being a member of God’s kingdom?

  6. How did the apostles and prophets provide the foundation of the church?

  7. How is Jesus alone the corner stone of “God’s temple,” the church? What is significant about the corner stone?

  8. How are you a living stone in God’s building? How are you joined with other living stones? How can you grow with others “into a dwelling of God in the Spirit” (verse 22)?
