The State of the Church
The Right Perspective
Community challenges us to be more like Jesus
God’s word reminds us that we are put in relationships in order to encourage one another in our pursuit of God and his Kingdom. It’s within the context of community that we are given the opportunity to be refined as followers of Christ.
Hebrews 10.23-25
23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
This is so much more than a group of people that has a few things in common!
A telescope is a valuable tool. Used properly, it makes distant objects appear closer. However, used improperly it, in fact, makes the problem of seeing distant objects worse.
The Church was established for these seasons.
Acts 2.42-47
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
“I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living. It’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of the telescope.” —Dr. Suess
The wrong end of the telescope.
It pushes the image so much further away than it truly is.
If it is a problem, and we look at the problem through the right end of the telescope, the problem is magnified.
Making it so much larger than it is.
Look at life through the right end of the telescope and your problems through the wrong end.
Isn’t that the way we should look at life?
For our problems to become much, much smaller.
So, actually, the wrong end is the right end.
It’s all about perspective.
When we begin to see life from God’s perspective we see life differently.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OUR PERSPECTIVE AND GOD’S PERSPECTIVE
- Our perspective is often limited and small.
- Our perspective can often be warped or flawed.
God’s perspective is always big, balanced and filled with purpose.
God wants to give us a glimpse from His perspective so that we will see things differently and never be the same again.
Psalm 46.1-3
1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
