Reflections on Sunday’s Sermon

Below is a reference to the section of the New City Catechism that we went over on Sunday:

The New City Catechism

Lord’s Day 10

What Does God Require in the Fourth and Fifth Commandments?
Fourth, that on the Sabbath day we spend time in public and private worship of God, rest from routine employment, serve the Lord and others, and so anticipate the eternal Sabbath. Fifth, that we love and honor our father and our mother, submitting to their godly discipline and direction. (Leviticus 19:3)

Scripture

Hebrews 6:9-12 - (English Standard Version)

9 Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation. 10 For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do. 11 And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Understanding and Applying

  1. Assurance: Though the author warns the Hebrew Christians (vv. 4-6), he immediately follows up with affection and words of assurance: ‘we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation’. What are some things that belong to salvation (John 6:47; Romans 8:29-30; Philippians 1:6)?

  2. • Despite our wandering and tendency to grow weary, why can we have assurance regarding our salvation (Ephesians 1:13-14, 2:8-9)?

  3. Confidence: As the author reflects on the overall condition of the Hebrew Christians, he is confident of their salvation. What are some signs of salvation in the lives of the Hebrew Christians (v. 10; John 13:35; Ephesians 2:10; Hebrews 10:32-35)?

      • What are some ways that you see God working in you to serve the saints?

  4. Perseverance: What does the author desire of each Hebrew Christian (vv. 11-12)?

    • How does the author’s desire challenge your life regarding laziness towards God or lack of assurance in God’s future promises (hope)?

    • Are there any saints, past or present, who inspire you to press on towards the goal despite life’s perplexities?
