Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ…
—Ephesians 4:15
Big Idea: When God’s love requires that we disagree, His love must oversee how we disagree.
When God’s love requires that we disagree…
1. We must KNOW God’s truth.
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” —John 14:15
2. We must OBEY God’s truth.
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” —John 8:31
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! 24 And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! —Psalm 139:23
3. We must SHARE God’s truth.
but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, —1 Peter 3:15
…His love must oversee how we disagree.
1. We disagree FROM love.
God’s love—not His truth—requires we disagree.
We have a “duty to aid” because we know God’s plan is the path to life and all other paths are perilous.
2. We disagree IN love.
For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. —Philippians 3:18
We disagree “through tears.” We should never bring the challenge of God’s truth unless we have tears in our eyes.
3. We disagree WITH love.
We disagree to win hearts through kindness.
We “humanize,” not “demonize.”
