The Biblical Case For Tithing
Introduction
2 Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. —2 Timothy 4:2 (ESV)
22 “You must set aside a tithe of your crops—one-tenth of all the crops you harvest each year. 23 Bring this tithe to the designated place of worship—the place the Lord your God chooses for his name to be honored.
—Deuteronomy 14:22-23 (NLT)6 But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit. —Romans 7:6 (NLT)
Is Tithing A Requirement For Eternal Life? __Definitely Not!
Why Do We Teach Tithing If Christians Are Free From The Law?
1. Tithing Is Not A
But Rather A
19 Melchizedek blessed Abram with this blessing: “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. 20 And blessed be God Most High, who has defeated your enemies for you.” Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he had recovered. —Genesis 14:19-20 (NLT)
22 And this memorial pillar I have set up will become a place for worshiping God, and I will present to God a tenth of everything he gives me.” —Genesis 28:22 (NLT)
Key Point: People were tithing long before the Law existed, and God was blessing them.
2. Tithing Was Not
But Rather
By Jesus
23 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important —Matthew 23:23 (NLT)
41 Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. 42 Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins.
43 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. 44 For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.” —Mark 12:41-44 (NLT)38 Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.” —Luke 6:38 (NLT)
10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test! —Malachi 3:10 (NLT)
3. Tithing May Be
In The New Testament But It’s
.
My Reason For Tithing
1. To Express My
2. To Signal My
15 “If you love me, obey my commandments. —John 14:15 (NLT)
My Readiness For Tithing
Three Factors That Determine My Readiness:
1. My
2. My
3. My
1 “Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven. 2 When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get. 3 But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. 4 Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. —Matthew 6:1-4 (NLT)
7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” —2 Corinthians 9:7 (NLT)
The Reward For Tithing
19 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. —Matthew 6:19-20 (NLT)
14 Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace. 15 Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not! —Romans 6:14-15 (NLT)
12 “Yes, I’m on my way! I’ll be there soon! I’m bringing my payroll with me. I’ll pay all people in full for their life’s work —Revelation 22:12 (TMB)
13 But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. 14 If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. 15 But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames. —1 Corinthians 3:13-15 (NLT)
