The Power of Words

Sermon Series: 40 Days of Love
October 30, 2022
Pastor Phil Chorlian

When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. —James 3:3-5

Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. —James 3:5-6

For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. —Matthew 12:34

Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them. —Mark 7:15

If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector. —Matthew 18:15-17

III. Love people with words that

.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. —Ephesians 4:29

A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in a settling of silver. —Proverbs 25:11

The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life. —Proverbs 15:4

Blessed are those who depend on the God of Jacob for help. Blessed are those who put their hope in the Lord their God. —Psalm 146:5
