Day 128 - The Character of God
Emily Green
“For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on His shoulders. And He will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” - Isaiah 9:6 NLT
Isaiah 9:6 is often used during the Christmas season. This prophecy by the prophet Isaiah in the Old Testament foretold the birth and life of Jesus, the Messiah. We see in this verse that there are four things Jesus will be “called” as the Messiah: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.
These four titles are names of Jesus, the physical representation of God. However, they also represent the character of God, which is one of the most important things we must understand as believers in Jesus.
The way we view God’s character determines the way we see God. “Character” is defined by Oxford Dictionary as “the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.” In other words, God’s character (His qualities) distinguishes who He is.
2 Samuel 7:22 says, “How great you are, O Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you. We have never even heard of another God like you!” Our God is distinguished. There has never been anyone like Him; there is no one like Him, and there will never be anyone like Him. When we can grasp the reality of the character of God, we will truly understand the heart of God. When we understand His heart, we know who He is!
Next Steps
- Think about it: What do you know about God’s character?
- Think about it: What about our God makes Him different than other “gods”?
- Action Step: Thank God today that He is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace!
