“As Jesus was starting out on His way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to Him, knelt down, and asked, ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’
‘Why do you call Me good?’ Jesus asked. ‘Only God is truly good. But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.’
‘Teacher,’ the man replied, ‘I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.’
Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. ‘There is still one thing you haven’t done,’ He told him. ‘Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.’
At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.” —Mark 10:17-22 NLT

Discussion Questions
What are some things you’re currently stressed about? Why?
Is it possible that the reason you’re stressing about some things is because you’re trying to find life or shalom (peace; wholeness; completeness) in those things?
What are some things other than Jesus that you find yourself tempted to look to for life and shalom? Why do you think we tend to try and find life in things outside of our realtionship with Jesus?
In Jesus’ interaction with the rich young ruler, what is Jesus’ ultimate response to how a person inherits eternal life? What is standing in the way of this young man receiving eternal life himself?
The rich young ruler didn’t see himself as a sinner as indicated by his response to Jesus directing him to certain commandments. The Law isn’t meant to save us, but to show us our need for a Savior. Read and reflect on this truth in Galatians 2:16. Why is this good news? Why might it also be uncomfortable?
Are there thigns in your life currently that might be standing between you and following Jesus? Take some time to reflect on what these things might be. Ask for God’s guidance that you may repent and follow Him.
