Bear Witness
We can bear witness to the reality of Jesus Christ because …
His eyewitnesses
His eyewitnesses
His eyewitnesses
Does colder weather make you happy or sad?
How do the following verses describe the first followers of Jesus? (Acts 1:8; 1:21-22; 2:32; 3:15; 4:33; 5:32; 10:39-41; 13:31)
Read Acts 3. On what basis do Peter and John testify to the resurrection of Jesus? In what way is our witnessing connected to the eyewitnesses of Jesus? (2 Timothy 1:8)
Read Acts 4:1-7, 13-18. What did the religious leaders of the Jews do in response to Peter and John’s witnessing? What made them so upset?
How does our culture attempt to silence the witnesses of Jesus today?
In Acts 4:8-12, 19-20, what was Peter and John’s response to the threats made by the Jewish leaders? “Undivided loyalty”. What are the things in our cultural context that threaten your loyalty to the one true living God and the uniqueness of Jesus Christ?
- What does the expression “giving your testimony” bring to mind? How does the popular practice relate to what the Bible means about “bearing witness”? How can we resist the tendency to make “our testimony” be mostly about us, rather than about the great truths of God in Christ?
- Can you point to ways in which the task of witnessing has resulted in strengthening your own Christian faith and understanding?
- Courts sometimes speak of someone as “a credible witness” (or not, as the case may be). What constitutes a “credible witness” for Christ?
- If the essence of the gospel is “good news”, how can it be heard in our community as truly good news?
Close in prayer.
