Reflections on Sunday’s Sermon

Below is a reference to the section of the New City Catechism that we went over on Sunday:

The New City Catechism

Lord’s Day 7

What Does the Law of God Require?
Personal, perfect, and perpetual obedience; that we love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength; and love our neighbor as ourselves. What God forbids should never be done and what God commands should always be done. (Matthew 22:37-40)

Scripture

Hebrews 5:7-10 - (English Standard Version)

7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Understanding and Applying

  1. Mark 14:32-42: Compare the passage in Mark with Hebrews 4:15 and Hebrews 5:7?

  2. • How do these passages reveal the true humanity of Christ and therefore, his ability to truly sympathize with our weakness?

  3. Philippians 2:6-8: Compare the passage in Philippians with Hebrews 5:8-9.

  4. • In your own words, why was Jesus an acceptable sacrifice for our sins (1 Peter 1:18-19)?

  5. Doctrine: What are some core truths that God is revealing to us regarding His Son and our salvation?

  6. Implications: How does this passage push us towards Jesus and therefore, expose our tendency to look to other things or other people for our true needs—for sympathy, comfort, or assurance?

  7. Prayer: How does this passage encourage you to boldly approach the throne of grace in prayer?
