What distinguishes hypocrisy from lies, and what about hypocrisy seems to make it so prevalent among people?

Hypocrisy can often be identified with the attitude or even the statement that “I know others should/should not … , but I … ,” essentially that the rules don’t apply to me. What keeps us from seeing it in ourselves when we often see it in others so easily?

In light of Matthew 6, what is required to take off our masks of hypocrisy and live genuinely? What can we expect from God when we live transparently?
