2 Samuel 9:3-13

“Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.” —2 Samuel 9:7 (NIV)

CP Group Discussion Questions

  1. The table has always been one of the primary places of human connection. It’s not surprising that the central religious ceremony in the Old and New Testaments revolved around a table: the Passover meal and the Lord’s Supper. What is so important about gathering at a table to share a meal with people we love?
  2. Ask someone to tell the story of Mephibosheth in their own words (2 Samuel 9:1-11). After they’ve finished, ask if anyone else would like to fill-in any details from the story. How is Mephibosheth’s story a miniature picture of the Gospel of Jesus Christ?
  3. Mephibosheth’s seat at the table was in invitation into a greater and better story. Judgment was replaced with grace, scarcity was replaced with abundance, and despair was replaced with hope. How can we step into a greater story at our own tables (or wherever your family/friends gather)?
