“Wholeness” (John 5)

“Do you WANT to get WELL?”
Jesus asks this incredible question to someone who has been physically paralyzed for 38 years and personally far away from God during those four decades. This miracle account teaches us two things: (1) people search for “wellness” in the wrong places;
(2) the right way to find wholeness in a relationship with God.

Discussion Questions

Getting Started

  1. “Do you want to get well?” If God asked you this question when you’re struggling, you’d shout: “Of course!” But do you have the courage to do what needs to happen to find wholeness? Is there something that is holding you down in your life? Has there ever been a sin or a superstition that has actually hindered your relationship with God?

Digging Deeper

  1. Superstition is based on the belief that an “object” has magical powers or a certain “action” or “word” will impress the higher forces. Study these different superstitions: astrology (Dt 4:15-20); divination, sorcery (2 Kgs 21:1-9; Is 2:6); old wives’ fables (1 Tim 4:7); deceptive philosophy (Col 2:8); idols (1 John 5:21). These “five superstitions” are extremely dangerous because they open our minds to the influence of Satan. Do you have a superstition?

  2. God makes us whole, complete, and healthy (Ps 103:3; 1 Pt 2:24; Ex 15:26; Heb 10:14; Jer 30:17; 33:6; Is 48:18). What brings forth God’s healing power in your broken life? Do you trust that God wants your heart healed?

Applying the Word to Life

  1. Have you ever tried the following to get well mentally or emotionally and you still felt like something was missing? Counseling. Medication. Self-help books. Eat right. Time off. Gym. While all these things can be good, nothing completes us like a relationship with Christ (Col 2:9). If you want lasting peace, work through Col 3:12-17 to make sure that Christ is the center of everything you do.
