Sermon Title & Text “The Yielded Life” 1 Kings 19:19-21 ESV
Sermon Series: Wisdom: What God Knows! Better decisions & Greater Insight
Message in a Sentence: Our lives are measured in what we have to pass on.
• After hearing from the Lord, Elijah moved from cave to mission field. Not just a physical move but a spiritual move from depression to fruitfulness. When God finds us and speaks, we respond by moving - immediately.
• Priority One: The Lord (Jesus) speaks so, Elijah acts immediately by first appointing his spiritual replacement first, perhaps as a show of importance.
• 2nd time seeing Elijah the individual be used to affect significant change. {cf 1 Ki 18:22}. One Christ directed person makes a God sized impact.
• Elijah threw his cloak on Elisha as a way of appointing him for God’s service. Many ponder significance, but What is clear is that Elisha took Elijah’s action as a call to serve the Lord.
• The mantle/cloak was an official garment of the prophet.
• Elisha’s question wasn’t hesitation ch Lk 9, rather it was showing honor. Elijah’s answer is recognizing that even as Elisha’s mentor, his ultimate responsibility is to God. Principle: Lead but don’t force.
• A Life that Counts: Principles of Leading People to Serving
- Whom God chooses
- Go where Elisha is: in a field plowing, not in a library studying
- Give you
- Become Teacher cf Heb 5:11-14
• Principles of Being Called
