(Exodus 20:8-11)

I. Finding Rest in God

         Note: Sabbath (šabbā) means to stop or pause

Ephesians 5:15-16 “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.”

         A. Remember to Keep the Sabbath


             (Exodus 20:8;16:23b)

         B. Remember That God Created Us For and

Exodus 20:9 “Six days you shall labor, and do all your work”

               1. We Are Co-Workers With God

Genesis 2:5 “When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground.”

               2. Take This Job and It

Genesis. 2:15 “The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.”

1 Corinthians 3:9 “For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.”

         C. Remember That We Need a Weekly Rhythm of With the Lord

Exodus 20:10a “but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.”

Hebrews 10:25 “not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

               1. A Day That is Not Business As

Exodus 20:10b “On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.”

               2. Saturday Became a Day to Remember That God is Our
                   (Exodus 20:11a; Revelation 14:7)

               3. Sunday Became a Day to Remember That God is Our
                   (Matthew 12:3-6)

                           a. Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath
                              (Matthew 12:7-13)

         D. Remember That Your Rest Comes Through Christ

Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

               1. The Occurred on Sunday!

Luke 24:1-2 “But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb”

               2. Christians Together on Sunday

Acts 2:1 “When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.”

Acts 20:7 “On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight.”

               3. Christians Gave on Sunday

1 Corinthians 16:1-2 “Now concerning the collection for the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do. On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come.”

               4. Christians Heard the on Sunday

Acts 20:7 “On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread,Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight.”

Colossians 2:16-17 “Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.”

Hebrews 4:9-11 “So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.”
