His Check Engine Light Is On

Introduction

Why Do Some Men Lie?

1. To Their -

2. To Themselves -

3. To Drama –

4. To Other’s -

Hogwash 7:1

44 For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies. —John 8:44 (NLT)

2-5 There was no water there for the community, so they ganged up on Moses and Aaron. They attacked Moses: “We wish we’d died when the rest of our brothers died before God. Why did you haul this congregation of God out here into this wilderness to die, people and cattle alike? And why did you take us out of Egypt in the first place, dragging us into this miserable country? No grain, no figs, no grapevines, no pomegranates—and now not even any water!”
6 Moses and Aaron walked from the assembled congregation to the Tent of Meeting and threw themselves facedown on the ground. And they saw the Glory of God.
7-8 God spoke to Moses: “Take the staff. Assemble the community, you and your brother Aaron. Speak to that rock that’s right in front of them and it will give water. You will bring water out of the rock for them; congregation and cattle will both drink.”
9-10 Moses took the staff away from God’s presence, as commanded. He and Aaron rounded up the whole congregation in front of the rock. Moses spoke: “Listen, rebels! Do we have to bring water out of this rock for you?”
11 With that Moses raised his arm and slammed his staff against the rock—once, twice. Water poured out. Congregation and cattle drank.
12 God said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you didn’t trust me, didn’t treat me with holy reverence in front of the People of Israel, you two aren’t going to lead this company into the land that I am giving them.”
13 These were the Waters of Meribah (Bickering) where the People of Israel bickered with God, and he revealed himself as holy. —Numbers 20:2-13 (MSG)

Two Principles That Christian Men Violate When They Lie:

1. In God

12 God said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you didn’t trust me.”
—Numbers 20:12 (MSG)

31 Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” —John 8:31-32 (NLT)

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.
6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. —Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)

2. Of God

12 God said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you didn’t treat me with holy reverence in front of the People of Israel.” —Numbers 20:12 (MSG)

17 Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth. —John 17:17 (NLT)

Penalty of Mispresenting The Truth

1 Better to be poor and honest than to be dishonest and a fool.
5 A false witness will not go unpunished, nor will a liar escape. —Proverbs 19:1-5 (NLT)

3 Dear brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly. —James 3:1 (NLT)

Conclusion

19 The person who made the idol never stops to reflect, “Why, it’s just a block of wood! I burned half of it for heat and used it to bake my bread and roast my meat. How can the rest of it be a god? Should I bow down to worship a piece of wood?”
20 The poor, deluded fool feeds on ashes. He trusts something that can’t help him at all. Yet he cannot bring himself to ask, “Is this idol that I’m holding in my hand a lie?” —Isaiah 44:19-20 New Living Translation (NLT)
