Day 188 - Just Talk
Cathy Anderson
“And when you are praying, do not use thoughtless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. 8 So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.” – Matthew 6:7-8 NASB
I remember when I first got saved. I would listen to the pastor pray, my small group leader would pray, and anyone I respected seemed to know how to pray. It was really intimidating!
However, in Matthew, Jesus tells us that our Father isn’t impressed by how well we pray! He simply wants to hear from us. Who are we trying to impress? Who are we talking to? Whether praying out loud with a brother or sister, in the shower, or over dinner, just talk to God.
So, if it’s that simple, why do mature Christians sound so eloquent to a new believer’s ears? Well, the more time we spend in God’s Word, the more His Word becomes a part of us. Since His Word is so powerful, it might sound impressive when we hear someone who walks with God praying. But know, what you are attracted to isn’t prose and poetry. It is someone walking in the presence of the Holy Spirit – because anything else is just noise.
Next Steps
- Think about it: Does it intimidate me to pray out loud? Why or why not?
- Think about it: How can you learn more about God’s Word?
- Action Step: Choose a Bible plan to read every day (it could be this one)! YouVersion also has great Bible plan options and a verse of the day.
