Lesson 7 — Study Guide

— JESUS TEACHES THE NEW BIRTH

CHART 1/LESSON 7

Jesus received mixed reactions to His ministry. The Bible tells us that the

people heard Him gladly (Mark 12:37). He came to preach the Gospel to the (Luke 4:18). Many of the chief rulers also believed on Jesus but would not Him for fear that they might be cast out of their places of leadership.

One of the most interesting conversations with a religious leader involved a man named

who was a and a ruler of the (John 3:1-3).

Within the conversation, we find that Jesus quickly brought the focus of the
conversation to the most important matter in life; How can a person

God’s kingdom and into it?

Jesus said that the

way a person can see and the kingdom of
heaven is to be .

In response to this statement by the Lord, Nicodemus asked how a person could
possibly be born again in the natural. Jesus replied, “Except a man be born of the

and of the , he cannot enter into the kingdom of God” (John 3:5).

The New Birth, or being born again, consists of two

. These two are and . Water refers to baptism in water and the spirit
refers to the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

This promise is to all believers. Notice John 7:37-39. These are some of the facts which are included in this statement by Jesus.

  1. The is to any person.
  2. The only qualifying factor is that a person must .
  3. The person who would obtain this promise must come to .
  4. The person who would receive this promise must on Jesus.
  5. The rivers of that will flow out of the believer is
the , or called the Holy Ghost.

— JESUS TEACHES IN PARABLES

CHART 2/LESSON 7

Jesus often taught in what is called a

. This is an earthly story with a application, and it is used to teach great truth.

The parable of the sower is found in

, with the interpretation in verses - . Parallel accounts of this parable are found in Mark 4:1-20 and Luke 8:4-15.

The basic lessons of the parables are:
1. The seed that is sown is the

.
2. The soil represents those who the Word but fail to
understand it and the comes quickly to catch the Word away from them.
3. The are those who receive the Word for a moment. But when temptation comes, they fail because they are not in the Word.
4. The ground represents those who hear the Word and begin to bear . However, they allow the and pleasures of life to grow in their life which choke away their concern for the Word of God.
5. The good ground represents those who the Word, it, and it.

The point is: that a person chooses what kind of soil they want to be!

Two other parables that are interesting to examine are called the Pearl of Great Price found in Matthew 13:45-46 and the parable of the Talents told in Matthew 25.

— THE ROAD TO CALVARY

CHART 3/LESSON 7

The last week of the life of Christ before His crucifixion saw many prophecies

.

One of these prophetic events is the triumphal entry as found in Zechariah 9:9 and Matthew 21:1-17.

The last supper is the next event that occurred during the week before the crucifixion (Matthew 26:17-29). This meal which is called the

supper taken during the week of passover, took on a new meaning with the Lord for it signifies that Christ, our is sacrificed for us (I Corinthians 5:7). Paul explained the meaning in I Corinthians 11:26 by telling us that the represents Christ’s body, the of the vine symbolizes His blood, and that this ordinance is to be observed and should continue until the Lord’s .

Before the last supper Jesus exposes the person named

who should betray Him (Matthew 26:20-25).

GETHSEMANE
After the supper, Jesus and His

came to the Garden of . After telling eight disciples to wait, Jesus took , , and a little further into the Garden. He asked them to watch with Him. After going about a stones throw from them, the Lord goes into intense . While He prayed, the disciples went to (Matthew 26:40-41).

After a time, Jesus is met by Judas who gave Jesus a

as a sign to the armed multitude that came to capture Him.

We read about the trial in Matthew 26:57-69, which is a

. First, He is
taken to , the High Priest where there were false witnesses and they accused Him of blasphemy and declared Him to be guilty of death.

Then Jesus is led to

who was the Roman Governor over Judea, and was responsible for handing out the death penalty on criminals. Pilate questioned Jesus and declared that he could find no . But in following a custom of releasing one criminal unto the Jews at Passover, Pilate offered to release Jesus. However, the mob cried out for the release of a man named who was robber, insurrectionist, and murderer (Mark 15:7).

As a result of their request, Pilate had Jesus

. This was in direct fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy of Isaiah 53:5

— CHRIST DIED FOR US

CHART 4/LESSON 7

On the cross, Jesus took upon Himself all the

(II Corinthians 5:21, I Peter 2:22, Romans 5:8-10).

First Jesus is mocked by the

. As they led Him to Calvary, they found a man named and forced Him to carry the cross.

The soldiers then

Jesus, placing His cross between two thieves.
Over the cross of Jesus was the accusation: THIS IS JESUS, OF THE JEWS.

Those who passed by the cross

the Lord. However, one of the criminals who was being crucified next to Jesus found a place of trust in Jesus and found a place of salvation.

Jesus even

those who crucified Him by saying, “Father, them; for they know not what they do.”

After Jesus died, the

in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. Also, there was a great .

A man who is seen as a secret disciple of Jesus named

asked Pilate for permission to take away the body of Jesus and with the help of placed Jesus in His personal tomb.

What looked like defeat was actually a great victory for the kingdom of God. Jesus had accomplished His purpose in taking the place of sinful humanity and escape the wages of

(Romans 6:23).

— JESUS LIVES!

CHART 5/LESSON 7

God’s plan called for the Messiah to come forth out of the

. Notice Matthew 12:38-40.

The Chief Priests and the Pharisees ask Pilate for a guard over the tomb so that there would not be anyone stealing the body of Jesus (Matthew 12:38-40).

Still, when the time came for the Lord to arise, the angel of the Lord descended from heaven,

back the stone from the door of the tomb. The keepers of the tomb became like men. When women came to anoint the body of Jesus they found that Jesus had RISEN!

Later the Apostle Paul gives some of the facts of the resurrection in I Corinthians 15:4-8.

— THE GREAT COMMISSION

CHART 6/LESSON 7

The Great Commission is recorded in each of the three synoptic gospels. Matthew 28:18-20; Luke 24:45-49; Acts 1:4-8.

The elements of the great commission are:
1.
